Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests

Articles suggested here must already be featured articles. Articles do not have to be suggested to appear on the main page. Requests must be for dates within the next 30 days that have not yet been scheduled.

There may be no more than five total requests on this page at any time. If there are already five articles requested and if the article that you would like to request has a point value higher than the request with the lowest point value, you may replace it according to the instructions below.

Requests are not the only factor in scheduling today's featured article; the final decision rests with the featured article director (Raul654). Please confine date requests to this page, and remember that community endorsement on this page does not mean the article will appear on the requested date. See also User:Raul654/Featured article thoughts.

It is helpful to put the request, with the estimated point score (see below), up for discussion on the talk page pending template up to 60 days before the requested date; requestors should return to move the request to this page during the 30-day timeframe if the article has enough points to replace another article.

Calculating points:

Points are the sum of choices for each of the following six criteria:

Age (since promotion to featured article)
  • Promoted over a year, but less than two years, ago: 1 point
  • Promoted two or more years ago: 2 points
Timing (relevance to main page date request)
  • Date relevant to article topic:[1] 1 point
  • Decennary anniversary (10-year multiples): 2 points
  • Semicentennial anniversary (50-year multiples): 4 points
  • Centennial anniversary (100-year multiples): 6 points
Importance
Contributor history

Requestor has not previously had an article appear as Today's featured article and is a significant contributor of the article requested: 1 point

Diversity
  • Subject underrepresented at WP:FA:[3] 1 point
Main page representation
  • A similar article has not been featured on the main page:[4]
    • Within three months of requested date: 1 point
    • Within six months of requested date: 2 points
  • Deduct points if a similar article was recently featured on the main page:
    • Within two weeks of requested date: −3 points
    • Within one month of requested date: –2 points

Notes

  1. ^ For example Earth on Earth Day, a birthday, or the anniversary of an event receiving significant coverage in the article.
  2. ^ A "notable topic" is considered to be basic subject matter for a twelve-year old using Wikipedia for a school project.
  3. ^ The category where the article is listed at WP:FA has fewer than 50 featured articles. The categories which currently qualify are: Awards, decorations and vexillology; Business, economics and finance; Chemistry and mineralogy; Computing; Culture and society; Education; Engineering and technology; Food and drink; Health and medicine; Language and linguistics; Law; Mathematics; Philosophy and psychology; Religion, mysticism and mythology.
  4. ^ Similar is defined differently than the categories at WP:FA: two dissimilar articles may be grouped under the same category. For example, two film articles would be considered similar but an article about a newspaper and one about a film may be both grouped under Media but would not be considered similar. Conversely, similar articles may be in different categories at WP:FA: for example, atom and Noble gas.

Adding requests

Please nominate only one article at a time. The article must not have been previously featured as Today's Featured Article. Nominations are ordered by requested date below the summary chart. The archive of previously featured articles is here. If there are already five requests, and if the article you propose to add has more points than than one of the articles already requested, you may remove a request and add yours (explaining in your post the claimed point total) according to the following:

  1. If a requested article has over 75% oppose votes (counting the nominator as support) at least 48 hours after the request is initiated, it will be removed regardless of its point value.
  2. If item 1 doesn't apply, then if there are two requests for the same date, the request within that date with the lowest number of points may be removed, regardless of how many points articles outside that date may have.
  3. Otherwise, replace the request that has the least points. If there is a tie, choose the one with the highest percentage of opposes. In case of a tie in oppose percentage, replace the one with the weakest support for number of points. If point support is equal, you may replace any of the tied requests you choose.

Requests

September 8

Replaced Michael Jackson which was requested for 8/29 due to oppose and only two points for the nominator and one support...[1]

The Yellowstone fires of 1988 together formed the largest wildfire in the recorded history of Yellowstone National Park, USA. Starting as many smaller individual fires, the flames spread quickly out of control with increasing winds and drought and combined into one large conflagration, which burned for several months. The fires almost destroyed two major visitor destinations and, on September 8, 1988, the entire park was closed to all but non-emergency personnel for the first time in its history. Only the arrival of cool and moist weather in the late fall brought the fires to an end. A total of 793,880 acres (3,213 km2), or roughly 36 percent of the park was affected by the wildfires. Thousands of firefighters fought the fires, assisted by dozens of helicopters and airplanes which were used for water and fire retardant drops. At the peak of the effort, over 9,000 firefighters were assigned to the park. With fires raging throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and other areas in the western United States, the staffing levels of the National Park Service and other land management agencies were inadequate to the situation. Over 4,000 U.S. Military personnel were soon assisting in fire suppression efforts. The fire fighting effort cost $120 million. No firefighters died while fighting the fires in Yellowstone, though there were two fire-related deaths outside the park.(more...)

Self nominating Yellowstone fires of 1988 for 9/8/2008 due to 20 year anniversary of the fires which closed Yellowstone National Park for the first time in its history on that date. Equates to 2 pts decennary and 2 points for no similar articles in six months. Most significant event to occur in the history of the National Park Service and Yellowstone NP for that matter...at least since both the park and the park service were founded.--MONGO 22:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

  • Support - as this looks promising, it'd be good if you'd expand the blurb you posted above. NB, I think you need a pausal comma near the date, ie "and, on September 8, 1988," to mark off the subordinate clause. --Dweller (talk) 09:21, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

September 11

United Airlines Flight 93 was a scheduled U.S. domestic passenger flight from Newark International Airport, in Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco International Airport. It was hijacked by four men as part of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Over 40 minutes into the flight the hijackers breached the cockpit, overpowered the pilots and took over control of the aircraft, diverting it toward Washington, D.C. Several passengers and crew members made telephone calls aboard the flight and learned about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. As a result, the passengers decided to mount an assault against the hijackers and wrest control of the aircraft. The plane crashed in a field just outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 150 miles (240 km) northwest of Washington, D.C., killing all 44 people aboard, including the hijackers. Many witnessed the impact from the ground and news agencies began reporting on the event within an hour. The plane fragmented upon impact, leaving a crater, and some debris was blown miles from the crash site. The remains of everyone on board the aircraft were later identified. Subsequent analysis of the flight recorders revealed how the actions taken by the passengers prevented the aircraft from reaching either the White House or United States Capitol. A permanent memorial is planned for construction on the crash site. The chosen design has been the source of criticism and is scheduled to be dedicated in 2011. (more...)

Nominating United Airlines Flight 93 for Today's FA on September 11—the 7th anniversary of the attacks. One point for date, one point for no similar articles within three months, one point for myself never having nominated a TFAR. --> 3 pts. (Note: there should be a paragraph break after "wrest control of the aircraft", but it's not coming up on my computer for some reason) -- Veggy (talk) 15:07, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

  • Support Good nomination, if a little early. I think we need to rethink how early we allow nominations on this page, as there are limited slots available. --Dweller (talk) 15:17, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Really? Limited slots? How exactly does the process work? Who decides when articles go on the page because it looks random besides the requests on here. -- Veggy (talk) 15:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Well there are limited slots because there are only 365/366 days in a year. Deamon138 (talk) 15:50, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Lol. Serious answer is in the page's instructions (see above) "There may be no more than five total requests on this page at any time." --Dweller (talk) 22:08, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support - Very appropriate article for the day, excellent idea. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:08, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support - It must be run on this day! 100% relevant to the date. Dincher (talk) 00:54, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support Date relevance and the article is well written, espcially considering the long standing arguments that were finally worked out.--MONGO 05:32, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support. Definitely appropriate since the article concerns an event named after the date that it occurred. Cla68 (talk) 06:25, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support Great choice, relevant to date, well written article. Pie is good (Apple is the best) 00:18, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Comment article does not mention conspiracy theories about the plane having been shot down.--Aejrad (talk) 20:35, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
    • Comment Perhaps it would be wise to discuss that on the article talk page. I know there is a 9/11 conspiracy theories article, look it up, it may be discussed there.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:42, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
    • Note: This user has no contributions other than his comment about conspiracy theories. Presenting these baseless theories constitutes undue weight and, as such, are not mentioned. -- Veggy (talk) 21:00, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

  • Support I even gave thought to not making a nomination so that this one would have a better chance. It's hard to image a more appropriate article for this date. Maybe a case to apply WP:IAR if a point-based system would knock it off.Kww (talk) 20:10, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support Wish we had WP:SNOW apply to this page.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:55, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Comment I suggest this nomination get one more for notability. I know the idea is that a 12 year old might do an assignment about the topic, and that children's books have been written about it. Well, here is a children's book about Flight 93. --Aude (talk) 22:16, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Comment: I think the problem is the point for anniversary. For an event like this that takes place on one day, it gets the same point as the Holloway disappearance that can technically be "anniversaried" on multiple days. -- Veggy (talk) 22:25, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, but you have Yellowstone with the same thing, and for all the talk about the most significant event in the history of the NPS, Sept 8 isn't mentioned in the blurb, and you have to dig to find it. And planet, we always had planets, Aug 24 is the anniversary of really dwarf planets being defined away. There were others, but they are off the page now.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:30, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Yellowstone fires hits 44 books and UA 93 hits 9 from amazon.com children's books. (I'm unclear if we've come to consensus on how to determine the notability point, but I'd give a point to both of them, and then they're both probably safe from being replaced.) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:40, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Sandy, let's leave status quo. NO ONE is going to remove the 9/11 article, I mean NO ONE. If Yao spent three weeks at two points and no one removed him, no one is going to touch this article. That effectively shields Yellowstone. Let's just leave things be. If I'm wrong, I will personally throw egg on my face. As for notability, I think we had unanimous support for removal but not enough editors for anyone to feel comfortable there was consensus, so I think we tacitly decided to throw all proposals out out and reassess after Labor Day--Wehwalt (talk) 23:17, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm inclined to agree (that is, that they have enough points to stay on the page, hence, no need to stir the nest of the notability point). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:19, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support- Good article for the date. Halgin (talk) 01:45, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Support - I can't believe it has been 7 years! Perfect selection. H1nkles (talk) 20:46, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

September 24

Myst is a graphic adventure video game designed and directed by the brothers Robyn and Rand Miller, and developed by their studio Cyan, Inc. The game was first released for Macintosh computers on September 24, 1993, as was later ported to Windows PC, Saturn, PlayStation, and 3DO platforms. Myst puts the player in the role of the Stranger, who uses a mysterious book to travel to the island of Myst. The book the Stranger finds, as well as other books like it on Myst, were written by an artisan and explorer named Atrus to travel to worlds known as "Ages". Traveling to each Age, the player solves puzzles and discovers clues about Atrus' sons, one of which has betrayed his father. Upon release, Myst was a surprise hit, becoming the best-selling PC game of all time until The Sims exceeded its sales in 2002. Myst's success spawned a media franchise encompassing four direct sequels, two spin-off games, and four novels. (more…)

Yeah, I know it will prolly get booted, but in the meantime... 1 point for date connection (release date, 15 years ago) and 1 point for no video game articles appearing as TFA by the time Myst would go up. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 01:59, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

NO video games within three months? What was the last one? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:17, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, whoops, I was thinking of deductions... Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 02:49, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
So, is it one point? Can you update the chart? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:51, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
