Featured Portals in Wikipedia A featured portal is a portal which is regarded by the community as being particularly good. This page is where featured portal candidates are considered by the community. Please see "what is a featured portal?" for general standards and criteria. Before nominating an article here, it is highly recommended you receive feedback from the community by listing it at portal peer review. Nominators are expected to make an effort to address objections. A portal should not be a featured portal candidate and at the same time be listed at portal peer review. Users are asked not to add a second nomination here until the first has gained support and concerns have been substantially addressed. Do not split a nomination page into subsections, which will cause problems in its archiving (if necessary, use bolded headings). Please respond positively to constructive criticism. For a nomination to be promoted to featured portal status, consensus must be reached that it meets the criteria. Consensus is built among the reviewers and nominators, as determined by the portal directors: Caulde, OhanaUnited and Qst. If, after sufficient time, objections considered actionable have not been resolved or consensus for promotion has not been reached, a nomination will be removed from the list and archived. At present, there are 129 featured portals, of a total of 577 portals on Wikipedia. |

Nomination procedure
Supporting and objecting Please read nominated portals fully before deciding to support or oppose a nomination.
Consensus must be reached for a portal to be promoted to featured portal status. Consensus shall be determined by a nomination closer who is not materially involved in the portal's development or maintenance, or any related WikiProjects. If enough time passes without objections being resolved, nominations will be removed from the candidates list and archived.

Portal:Atlas
Self-nomination. See the archived peer review, tho there was only one response. There are over 120 maps of a wide varying type, not including the ones in articles and bios. I believe this portal meets all the criteria and should be promoted. Thanks. Joe I 19:28, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Comments by Jh12 - Wikipedia:Featured portal criteria; Wikipedia:Portal/Guidelines.
- The portal could use a Things you can do section; would it also be possible to add a Did you know? section?
- Add Read more... links for that particular article/biography (Portal:Sustainable development)
- Would it be possible to expand Portal:Atlas/Maps/Geographic and Portal:Atlas/Maps/Nautical to ten selections?
Overall, I think the portal looks fantastic. --Jh12 (talk) 20:18, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
Portal:Theatre
Self-nomination. See archived peer review. Stats: 19 selected articles, all WP:FA, 14 selected biographies, all WP:FA, 12 selected pictures, all WP:FPs, 30 sets of 3 DYKs, all had appeared previously at T:DYK, 20 selected quotes, all with free-use images. News updates with Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs), and a Rotating In this month section. Things you can do has a link to a cleanup listing from WolterBot (talk · contribs), and articles with notability concerns from WP:WPNN. I believe the portal meets the standards for Featured Portal status.
Thanks to Awadewit for help with finding content and work at In this month. Cirt (talk) 08:09, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
- Support - I went ahead and italicized Selected quote; I couldn't find anything else wrong. --Jh12 (talk) 01:34, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
- Support. I'm impressed (as usual). The only thing concerning is the fact there are only 12 selected pictures - do you think you could consider increasing that to 15 or 20? Qst (talk) 18:00, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Every single selected picture is also a Featured Picture, that way the subsection can be titled: Featured Picture. If you know of any other Featured Pictures related to theatre, let me know and I will add those into rotation as well. Cirt (talk) 20:58, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Image:Thomas Keene in Othello 1884 Poster.JPG just passed WP:FPC. You could also consider Image:Geisha-kyoto-2004-11-21.jpg and Image:The Assassination of President Lincoln - Currier and Ives 2.png. :) Intothewoods29 (talk) 22:44, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Portal:United Nations
Self-nomination. Extensive work has been carried out on this portal and I now feel that it's up to FP standards. I requested a peer review months ago but nothing came of it. The portal is quite low maintenance, with random features and Wikinews imports, all that needs to happen is a picture change once a month. After reading some other FPOCs here I'll get to work on a randomized DYK section. Many thanks, --Joowwww (talk) 16:33, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

- Selected article - Would be nice to have (at least) 10 selections here. Currently only has 9, I am sure there must be other good articles to choose from. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Done 10 for the moment. --Joowwww (talk) 22:00, 1 October 2008 (UTC) - Selected biography - Currently 8 selected, would be nice to have more. Might try reformatting both Selected article and Selected biography sections after Portal:Sustainable development. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Done 10 for the moment --Joowwww (talk) 14:04, 3 October 2008 (UTC) - Nice usage of Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs). Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Done --Joowwww (talk) 21:46, 1 October 2008 (UTC) - Did you know - 3 static entries and no free-use image. Portal:Norway/DYK is a good model to use for randomization setup. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
- Picture of the month - Why not just straight randomization of Selected pictures, like at Portal:Science? Also if possible please wikilink or link the credits. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Done --Joowwww (talk) 11:31, 4 October 2008 (UTC) - Things you can do - Could be formatted better. Portal:Indiana has a good model for this. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Done --Joowwww (talk) 20:57, 3 October 2008 (UTC) - Other projects - This should be split into 2 separate subsections, Related portals and Associated Wikimedia. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Done --Joowwww (talk) 20:46, 3 October 2008 (UTC) - UN-related content on Wikipedia - The name of this subsection is a bit self-referential. Also, it should be split into 2 subsections: Categories, and Main topics. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Done --Joowwww (talk) 21:46, 1 October 2008 (UTC) - Would be nice if the Selected quotes had associated free-use images - Portal:Sustainable development has a good model of how to reformat this. Cirt (talk) 01:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Portal:Peru
Self-nomination. After lots of work, it seems to me Portal:Peru is ready for a featured portal nomination. As there are very few active members at Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru, this portal is designed to be as low-maintenance as possible. It currently has 15 selected articles, 20 selected pictures and 10 DYK sets each with 5 hooks, all of which rotate randomly thanks to the {{random portal component}} template. All selected articles are either featured or good articles and all the DYK hooks are properly referenced in their linked articles. There is no selected biography component because there are very few high quality Peru-related articles at Wikipedia so it would make no sense to split them in two sections. The only portal section that requires manual updates is the Peru news section and this has been continuously and regularly updated for over a year. As for other components there's a things you can do section, a Peru topics section plus related portals and wikiprojects sections. Every now and then you might see an occasional red link, they are a reflection of the limited number of Peru-related issues currently covered at Wikipedia and an encouragement for further contribution. --Victor12 (talk) 17:18, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

- New section looks clunky, good be improved by standardizing with Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs). Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean here. Coverage of Peru at Wikinews is quite spotty so no point in using the Wikinews Importer Bot. Any format improvement suggestions? --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs) could be used, in addition to a few chosen news events as used currently. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- The problem with the bot is that there aren't that many news about Peru at wikinews. According to http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Portal:Peru there are only four Peru related news items for all of 2008 at wikinews so it would not be very useful to use the bot. Could you be more specific about why this section looks "clunky". --Victor12 (talk) 01:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- It has redlinks. It has an awkward template-link to Wikinews at the bottom, instead of a different style which might mesh better with that subsection. Cirt (talk) 22:56, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Redlinks are there for a reason which I already explained in the first paragraph of this nomination. The purpose of this news section is not to serve as a link to Wikinews where, as I have said, coverage of Peru is virtually non-existant; the purpose is to point the reader to Peru related articles at Wikipedia. As for the template, I just changed it. Better now? --Victor12 (talk) 01:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- IMO and per general consensus from previous discussion in other WP:FPORTCs - redlinks really are not appropriate on a portal's main page, except usually in the Things you can do section under WP:Requested articles. Cirt (talk) 04:06, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

- Hrm, could there be some other sort of Selected section instead of biography? Perhaps cities, notable events, something like that? Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- As I said above there are not many good articles to select from, plus adding one more section would unbalance the portal. --Victor12 (talk) 01:30, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- There are always ways to work to rebalance the portal. And most WP:FPORTs do not have just one randomized Selected article section. Cirt (talk) 22:57, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, there's not enough high quality content to make a new section of selected articles. A notable events section could be possible but it would take lots of work and time so if this is a major obstacle for this nomination, then the portal should be failed until such work is done. --Victor12 (talk) 01:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, this is a good idea - it's not as good as just adding some other sort of "Selected content" section, but it would help. - Selected picture - missing roll-over caption on the images. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wouldn't this be redundant? I mean the picture already has a caption beneath it. See Today's featured picture at Wikipedia's main page, it has no roll-over caption, just the name of the pic file. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Peru topics - better to subst the template instead, and then reformat the entries, for example see Portal:Education. Cirt (talk) 17:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hmmm... the thing is the topics template is subject to changes so I think it is better to transclude to have it synchronized with articles such as Peru, which feature the {{Peru topics/Content}} template. --Victor12 (talk) 18:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes but it looks quite odd with the current formatting/style. Best if someone associated with the portal were to keep on top of the changes and change the Topics subpage accordingly. Or better yet, choose the most important topic links and include those in the subpage, and begin to differentiate from the template. Cirt (talk) 00:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Portal:Schools
After receiving enthusiastic comments and running out of ideas, I've decided to nominate the Schools Portal for featured status. Many thanks, --Jh12 (talk) 18:35, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Comment. Some of the selected pictures need to be reduced in size to fit properly in the box. RichardF (talk) 19:11, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- What screen resolution and browser are you using? --Jh12 (talk) 19:31, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've reduced the images by about half. I've been checking the portal on Windows XP with Firefox 3.0.1 and Internet Explorer 7 on a 1024x768 screen resolution so I apologize if I messed up on the image sizes. --Jh12 (talk) 20:03, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Portal:Schools/Selected picture/Layout is set to width=200px. Portal:Education/Selected picture/Layout is set to width=300px. That seems to work just fine, as long as the frame is taken into account as well. RichardF (talk) 20:15, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've changed the schools layout width to 300px. --Jh12 (talk) 20:27, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- The individual "size=" values seem to be set on the individual pages. These will override the default. You might want to remove those in some cases. RichardF (talk) 20:32, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

- Questions. Why is no selected biography section included? Why is no events-related section (e.g., news &/or anniversaries) included? RichardF (talk) 21:37, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- The schools project doesn't actually handle educators, only primary and secondary schools. I'm not sure about the news section. We're a child of the education project, and school-issues are merged with that subject. Would another project have to be set up at Wikinews, or a department at Wikiproject Schools? I have to admit, we can't even get enough editors for proper collaboration efforts. But the idea for school events/news is a good one. --Jh12 (talk) 22:22, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- No project is necessary to create a portal. It just makes sense to coordinate efforts, when applicable. That gets to a question I almost asked before you changed the topics section from education to schools articles, for the most part. Many links still relate to education, rather than schools, such as in the projects section and Wikimedia section. So the question is, to what extent is the content at Portal:Schools intended to be distinct from that at Portal:Education? In this case, I personally consider any biographies and events with clear connections to specific schools as fair game. Otherwise, this might as well be a subportal of Portal:Architecture. RichardF (talk) 23:44, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, that's an excellent question. It goes to the root of what Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools is, which is a project about individual primary and secondary schools: their history, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and a list of notable alumni. WikiProject Education and its portal is not supposed to cover individual schools but rather the concept of schools, universities, and education in general. This project also covers school districts, athletic conferences/associations, and school organizations. Partly due to a lack of participation at WP:Education and because the topics and issues are inter-related, WikiProject schools has adopted some articles (Secondary school is now covered by both projects). Strictly speaking, however, this portal is designed to cover any school that is not post-secondary. That's what the project is focused on, and there are over 130,000 of them just in the United States.[1] I thought the additional links to education topics were relevant because they are pretty closely related. But if there's confusion or too much overlap with education, I could remove them: previously the only links were for WP:Schools and WP:Education. --Jh12 (talk) 00:24, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- Portals and projects are not the same, and there is no requirement a portal covers the same scope of any particular project. In fact, most portals span the scopes of more than one project. I believe one implication of your comments is that this portal should include content with clear connections to specific schools or "their history, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and ... notable alumni." From that perspective, it sounds like a selected biography section should be included. Notable school-realted events, current & historical, should be included as well.

- Biography I'm still unsure about; I feel like educators on their own are notable not because of their work at a specific school, but because of their work for education in general. The same goes for alumni. The school is famous for having the alumni, but the alumni aren't famous because they were at the school in and of itself. School-related events I can definitely see. I would imagine such a section would include articles like the Little Rock Nine, the Red Guards (China), the Columbine High School massacre, and the Jena Six. I guess the original thought was to keep the portal simple; it's the wpschool portal and that's who maintains it. But from what I'm getting, the schools portal is supposed to stretch out into education, sociology, criminology, and more. Gosh, I guess it's not quite at featured status after all

- There certainly are notable educators associated with schools, e.g., Erin Gruwell and Joe Louis Clark. The question is more about whether any such articles are good enough to include in the portal. Also, a limited scope portal is fine, just don't expect it to make featured status. RichardF (talk) 01:59, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- I guess I was actually hoping to focus people's attention on the countless Wikipedia school articles. Perhaps that's too narrow-minded, or part of a pipe dream that more people will join the chronically understaffed schools project. --Jh12 (talk) 04:59, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- I still have mixed feelings about expanding the scope of this portal, given that WikiProject Schools already covers the complexities of over 21,000+ distinct school articles, almost seven times as many articles as WikiProject Education. Nevertheless, I would like to know how exactly one sets up WikiNews for schools, or would it be better to have a selected anniversary or events section? --Jh12 (talk) 23:26, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- What I've been suggesting doesn't involve expanding the scope of the portal, just adding sections within the existing scope. An automated WikiNews feed wouldn't work because it doesn't have a schools category. Any additions of news items from here or there would have to be selected manually. Doing something like "In this month," like at Portal:Oregon probably is more doable. RichardF (talk) 02:27, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Per the suggestions, I've added a biography section (currently with 11 biographies) and an "In this month" section. I tried to go through every day of the year starting with January 1 and every WPSchool article rated Top and most rated High for additional events. Each month currently has at least three events; I'm hoping people see my messages at the WPSchool, Australia, and Canada education projects and throw in some more ideas. Although I was reluctant to add the sections at first, I think the portal does look pretty nice and more filled out with them. --Jh12 (talk) 02:33, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

- Support. My thanks to Jh12 (talk · contribs) for the excellent work in addressing the points I raised above. The only things left to do are to fill in the missing sections at Portal:Schools/Selected anniversaries and fill out those other months where there are only a few dates listed. Also, it would not hurt to add a randomized Selected quote section like at Portal:Sustainable development, but this is certainly not necessary for WP:FPORT status, IMO.
