History
The school is a former secondary modern school (pupils who passed the Eleven Plus would have most likely attended Tadcaster Grammar School). The school was originally sited on Crossley Street, once these premises had become too small for the school, the new site was built in the 1960s (the notable feature being the tower block overlooking the car park of the town's shopping precinct The Horsefair Centre). Crossley Street Primary School now occupy the Victorian buildings of the former secondary modern school.
Buildings
The buildings were built in the mid 1960s and are very much 'of their time'. Although typically 1960s, and similar to many schools across Leeds, such as East Leeds High School in Seacroft and the former Merlyn Rees School in Belle Isle, they are not of a brutalist nature. The site is dominated by a main tower block, linked to the school hall by two footbridges, with two petruding stairwells and a mobile phone mast owned by Orange. Although loathed by many in the area, the buildings are an excellent example of architecture of its time. The site contains a smaller number of older buildings left over from HMS Ceres Landship. These have fallen into considerable disrepair and most were demolished in 2006.
Future
The school has recently had a new sports hall built. This was built away from the older buildings as they may soon require demolition. The site has become somewhat dilapidated and in need of redevelopment. However, being as there are many secondary schools in Leeds with worse problems then no redevelopment plans have been set for the school.
Former Pupils
Former pupils from the school include:
- Primrose Shipman (widow of notorious murderer Harold Shipman)
- England and Manchester City Footballer Micah Richards.
- Middlesbrough Footballer, Seb Hines.
- Jessica Barden, actress Coronation Street.
This should not be confused with the public school, Wetherby School in London. This school was named after the street name Wetherby Place, and has nothing to do with Wetherby High School. The street name 'Wetherby Place' was named after the town, Wetherby. Wetherby High School is a state school and not a public school.
