Timothy Jerome Mahoney (born February 17, 1970 in Omaha, Nebraska) is the lead guitarist for the group 311. Tim is best known for his single-noted riffs, and fusion of punk, latin, rock, and reggae styles. Tim went to Westside High School. In 4th grade he started on trombone before moving to guitar. This is what made him pursue music. Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton lived on the west side of town and went to Westside High School together.
During high school, Nick and Tim played in a rock band together called "The Ed's". Nick graduated at the age of 17. He then returned to Omaha for Chad and Tim's high school graduation - the three of them jammed and realized they had a special musical chemistry. Soon after that keyboardist Ward Bones was added to the mix. Before 311 he also played with Chad Sexton in a band called "The Bushmen". In 1991 he replaced the original guitarist of 311, Jim Watson. Nick Hexum asked Tim to join and hes been in with 311 ever since.
