Life
According to the testimony of Louis XIV of France's courtiers1, this benedictine nun enjoyed a special status and received important visitors such as the queen Marie Thérèse and Madame de Montespan. According to a rumor relayed by Saint Simon in his memoirs, she could be the illegitimate daughter of Marie Thérèse and Augustin/Nabo, a black dwarf presented to her by François de Vendôme, duc de Beaufort on behalf of the King of Dahomey. A legitimate daughter of Marie-Thérèse, Anne Elisabeth de France, was purportedly born cyanosed ("dark") at the Palais du Louvre Paris on 18 November 1662 and died six weeks later. Believers in Saint Simon's version propose that she was actually a black child and that her burial at the Royal Basilica of Saint Denis outside the capital was a sham ; she would have been secretly sent to Moret-sur-Loing, where she became a nun. Voltaire in his memoirs expresses the opinion that she was an illegitimate daughter of Louis XIV2. She died at the convent of Moret in 1732 or 1745.
