Te Waka a Māui

Te Waka a Māui (the canoe of Māui) is the Māori name for the South Island, New Zealand. Māori folk law says that it was the canoe which Māui stood on as he hauled up Te Ika-a-Māui (the fish of Māui - North Island).

Alternatively, another name for the South Island is Te Wai Pounamu.
