Context

Election will be held in 2014 because, according to the Article 83 of the Constitution of Romania, the "term of office of the President of Romania is five years, being exercised from the date the oath was taken".^[1] The last presidential election was held in 2009 and Traian Băsescu was sworn in for his second term on 21 December 2009. He is ineligible for a third term according to the Constitution.

Candidates

Social Liberal Union

The political alliance Social Liberal Union's designated candidate for the Presidential office is National Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu who is the favorite in all the opinion polls so far giving him a clear front runner position with between 35-40% of the electorate's vote with a continuous rising tendency. His candidature was assumed by the congresses of the three constituent parties of the Social Liberal Union; National Liberal Party, Social Democratic Party, and Conservative Party.

Democratic Liberal Party

The Democratic Liberal Party did not announce a candidate nor a selecting procedure yet. At the Extraordinary National Convention (party congress) called for 30 June 2012, Vasile Blaga was elected successor of Emil Boc, who resigned due to the poor local election results.

Through the 2008 - 2012 legislature, various names were rumoured but later abandoned due to various reasons: Emil Boc, then party leader and Prime Minister (dropped due to poor image and local election results), Teodor Baconschi, then Minister of Foreign Affairs (poor image after badly received declarations considering the Unirii Square protesters), and Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu, then Prime Minister (internal dispute following the motion of censure against his Cabinet and local election results); during the referendum campaign, he announced that a candidacy at the 2014 election is possible.^[2]

Greater Romania Party

It is expected for Greater Romania Party leader, Corneliu Vadim Tudor, to run for President again. No official statement has been made as of June 2012.

Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania

It is expected for the first and main ethnic Hungarian party to propose a candidate. No official statement has been made as of June 2012.

People's Party - Dan Diaconescu

it is expected that the candidate for presidency of PP-DD is its moral founder, Dan Diaconescu.
