Gutian County

Gutian County (古田县; pinyin: Gǔtián Xiàn; Foochow Romanized: Kŭ-chèng Gâing), also known as Edible Mushroom County[1], is a county lying in the southwest of Ningde, Fujian province, China. It is also known as "the town of the former worthy", as Zhuxi, a famous Chinese scholar once lived there.

History

The county was set up in the Tang Dynasty in 741 AD. Since Zhuxi, one of the famous scholars in China, lived there, it is also called "the town of the former worthy."

In 1895 the county was the site of a massacre of Christian missionaries.

Geography

The Minjiang River (Fujian) runs through Gutian, covering a distance of 35 km.

There are a number of scenic areas in Gutian.

  • The thousand-year-old Auspicious Tower (吉祥塔).
  • The Xishan Academy of Classical Learning (溪山书院), where Zhuxi once taught.
  • The Linshui Palace (临水宫).
  • The Temple of Paradise (极乐寺).
  • The Green Screen Lake (翠屏湖).

Public works

Gutian has an advanced transportation system including railways, highways, and seaways. One such railway, the Waifu (外福), is 33.2 km in length.

An abundance of water resources has contributed to the construction of the first national underground hydropower station, the Gutian Xishui Hydroelectric Power Station.

Agriculture

Gutian mushrooms come from a town known as "The Land of Fungi" (食用菌之乡). Their other exports are snow fungus (白木耳), shiitake (香菇), perch (鲈鱼), carps (鲤鱼), honey peaches (水蜜桃), reddish slab stones (桃花红石板材) and Younai plums (油柰).

Communications and public works

Gutian has an advanced transportation system including railway, highway and seaway. Waifu(外福) Railway is 33.2 km and the Minjiang River (Fujian) in this area is 35 km. The abundant hydroelectric power contributes to the building of the first national underground hydropower station. Gutian Xishui Hydroelectric Power Station, which currently is the largest volume in the Huadong district, is the first national underground hydropower station because of its abundant water resource.

Gutian mushrooms come the top of the national list and the town is called "the Land of Fungi"(食用菌之乡). Main specialties are tremellas(白木耳), fragrant mushrooms(香菇), perches(鲈鱼), carps(鲤鱼), honey peaches(水蜜桃), reddish slab stones(桃花红石板材), Younai plum(油柰) and so on.

Scenic spots

There are scenic spots such as "the Thousand-year-old Auspicious tower"(吉祥塔)," the Xishan Academy of Classical Learning"(溪山书院) where Zhuxi once taught," the Linshui Palace"(临水宫), "the Temple of Paradise"(极乐寺) and "the Green Screen Lake"(翠屏湖).

Miscellaneous

Gutian is a famous hometown of countrymen residing abroad. The number of overseas Chinese from this area amounts to more than 200,000, many traced to Sitiawan, Perak in Malaysia. It is also a national model county, which is famous for its culture, physical education and broadcasting TV programs.
