David Michael Carr (born September 8, 1956)[1] is an American journalist and author. He is a media and culture columnist for The New York Times. In his 2008 memoir, The Night of the Gun, he detailed his past experiences with cocaine addiction and includes interviews with people from his past, tackling his memoir as if he were reporting on himself. The story was excerpted in The New York Times Magazine.[2]

Carr was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and raised in nearby suburb Minnetonka. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he double-majored in Psychology and Journalism.[3] Carr is a former editor of the Twin Cities Reader and the Washington City Paper. He is featured prominently in the 2011 documentary Page One: Inside the New York Times.

He currently resides in Montclair, New Jersey, with his wife, Jill. They have three children.[4]
