Certifications

In 2003, American Council on Exercise was granted accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies for all four of its primary certification programs:[2]

Personal Trainer (PT) Certification [3]

This certification is designed to prepare fitness professionals to develop and implement safe and effective exercise programs for one-on-one or small-group client training.

Group Fitness Instructor (GFI) Certification [4]

This certification is designed to prepare fitness professionals to teach any form of exercise in a group setting. A foundational knowledge of exercise science and the skills necessary to teach any modality must be demonstrated.

Health Coach Certification [5]

This certification emphasizes fitness, nutrition and the science behind true behavior modification, and is intended for fitness, wellness, health care, human resources and allied health professionals.

Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist Certification (AHFS)[6]

This certification is designed to prepare fitness professionals to provide extensive programming for clients with the most common diseases, disorders and injuries, and in many cases multiple conditions. In addition, the credential addresses advanced programming for older adults, youth, and pre-natal and post-natal women.

Specialty Certifications

Weight Management Specialty Certification[7]

This specialty certification is designed for fitness professionals or members of allied health who want to address weight management by using behavior modification strategies and nutrition in addition to exercise programming specific to weight loss.

Sports Conditioning Specialty Certification[8]

This specialty certification is intended for anyone within or outside the fitness industry interested in programs that help people improve athletic performance.

Functional Training Specialty Certification[9]

This specialty certification is designed for fitness and allied health professionals who want to garner a deeper understanding of how to train the body to move more efficiently.

Mind Body Specialty Certification[10]

This specialty certification is designed for health practitioners or fitness professionals of one-on-one or group classes who are searching for a more holistic approach to wellness to bring to clients or patients. Wellness clinics, community centers and outreach programs can use the specialty certification to help their employees more safely and effectively deliver classes at their facilities.

Group Exercise Leadership Specialty Certification[11]

This specialty certification is designed for instructors currently teaching modality-specific or pre-choreographed classes or personal trainers who are exploring a new direction in group fitness. The curriculum complements the foundational education teachers receive in 1- or 2-day instructor training programs like Zumba fitness, Les Mills, Turbokick or indoor cycling.

Orthopedic Exercise Specialty Certification[12]

This specialty certification is designed for a wide range of professionals – from those within the fitness industry to athletic trainers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors and doctors. The curriculum discusses the structure and function of major joints, common musculoskeletal conditions, and general treatment clients will receive from orthopedic specialists. Upon completion, professionals will be able to develop exercise programs and incorporate progressions that address muscle imbalances, prevent injury, and improve movement patterns, muscular strength and endurance.

Therapeutic Exercise Specialty Certification[13]

This specialty certification is designed for fitness professionals and any allied health practitioners who use movement to treat patients living with a variety of special conditions. Personal trainers, group fitness instructors, physical therapists, occupational therapists or athletic trainers can use the knowledge they’ll gain to develop exercise programming for clients or patients with ailments, diseases or disorders that prevent them from falling under normal programming guidelines.

Senior Fitness Specialty Certification[14]

This specialty certification is designed for fitness and health professionals who want to help people over 55 increase their longevity and boost quality of life. Instructors of adult fitness programs at colleges and community centers, as well as personal trainers, health coaches, nurses, social workers and physical therapists can all use the expertise to deliver appropriate exercise programs that combat the effects of osteoporosis, arthritis and other age-specific conditions.\

Continuing Education

ACE offers a wide variety of continuing education courses,[15] including online courses, workshops, specialty certifications, ACE Symposium, free webinars, courses developed by educational partners, bundles and magazine quizzes.

Public Education and Outreach

As part of its mission to educate the public, ACE offers free health and fitness information through ACEfit.com. The website offers access to workout programs, an exercise library, thousands of free recipes using a variety of healthy ingredients, information about youth fitness programs, and expert insight from fitness professionals, registered dietitians and behavioral psychologists the organization partners with on a regular basis.

The American Council on Exercise executive team consists of:[16] Scott Goudeseune, President and Chief Executive Officer Alex Mirnezam, Chief Financial Officer Cedric X. Bryant, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer Janet Frenkel, Chief Operating Officer Graham Melstrand, Vice President, Corporate Affairs
