- March - The Malaysian no.1 singer, Sudirman Arshad won the title " Best Performer" in Asia Music Award 1989 contest at Royal Albert Hall, London.
- 26 April - Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak is installed as the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
- May - The Amanah Saham Bumiputra scheme is launched.
- 15 April - Malacca Town become as the historical city and also a sister cities of Kuala Lumpur.
- June - Proton Knight, the first Rally, Race, Research (R3) sports car is launched at Johor Circuit.
- 18-24 October - The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 89) is held in Kuala Lumpur.
- 22 September - Kedah Madrasah fire inferno, About 27 of students were killed including school girls.
- 2 December - The insurgency war against Communist terrorist has over and the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) ceased fire. The peace treaty signed at Hat Yai, Thailand. CPM is officially dissolved.
- 22 December - The 1989 Sumatran Earthquake, Malaysia also affected in earthquake but no damages and casualties had reported.
